Thanka Painting School is an integral part of Arya Tara School (ATS). The Art division was introduced in ATS in the year 2007. The main objective to introduce an art division in the school was to flourish the hidden artist inside a simple nun.

Mr. Chompel, Thanka Artist from Dharamshala, India has been appointed as the residential Thanka Painting teacher at ATS. Today the school has twenty of its nuns enrolled in the traditional art learning, under the two broad categories of Thanka Painting, and Modern Art.

On February 2009, the Thanka School conducted its first ever art competition under two categories; Traditional Thanka Painting and Modern Art. The traditional Thanka Painting students were to draw the portrait of Lord Buddha in his full robe, and similarly, the modern art students were to draw the portrait of HH, the Dalai Lama.

Ani Diki Dolma, and Ani Thupten Choynit were announced the winners of the competition in the Modern Art and Traditional Thanka Painting category, respectively.

On the occasion of Lhosar, the winners were given prizes by Mr. Durga Lal Shrestha, a famous Nepali Lyricist to recognize and encourage the talent and skills of our young nuns.
